HOW SHOULD I EXERCISE DURING MY PREGNANCY?
How Should I Exercise During My Pregnancy?
Dr. Ariel Edwards, PT, DPT, CSCS
Feel like you have heard hundreds of opinions on how to workout while pregnant, but not quite sure what’s right? You are not alone. There is a LOT of confusing and conflicting advice circulating out there! While we believe a lot of this advice comes from a good place, it is very challenging to provide blanket statements about what might be right for YOU during pregnancy.
Here’s some outdated advice we have heard as pelvic floor physical therapist:
“Just do what you were doing before.”
“ Don’t lift over 25 lbs.”
“Don’t let your heart rate go above xx.”
“Do your kegels.”
What exercising during pregnancy comes down to is the individual. Two women from extremely different pre-pregnancy fitness levels should be following two very different pregnancy training protocols! No advice fits all!
Instead of navigating through overwhelming advice, here’s what you should be doing during pregnancy instead:
Instead of trying to maintain or increase strength, gradually decrease the load and intensity throughout your pregnancy
Find ways to incorporate pelvic floor stretching and strengthening based on your starting point
Find a pelvic floor PT to assess your current movement patterns and imbalances (FIXXED has you covered!)
Follow a PT program that’s tailored to YOUR current level!
