The FOUR most common shoulder injuries we see!

Dr. Ariel Hovland, PT, DPT, CSCS

Shoulder injuries are one of the most common diagnoses we see at Fixxed. While the shoulder is a complex joint, maintaining healthy shoulders doesn’t have to be complicated! The shoulder joint is a ball in socket joint that allows you to reach overhead, behind your back, and in many different planes of motion. The shoulder joint is greatly affected by the scapula, thoracic spine, the neck, and the surrounding muscles!

Here are the most common shoulder injuries we treat at Fixxed:

  1. Rotator cuff tendinitis or strain: This occurs when there is an increase in demand placed on the rotator cuff. This could be due to postural impairments, a traumatic injury, or repetitive positions. Rotator cuff issues are common in overhead athletes and throwing athletes.

  2. Shoulder impingement: This occurs when the scapula is in a compromised position, which limits the range of motion in the shoulder. Clients often report pain with overhead movements, due to compression on the tendons that surround the shoulder. Shoulder impingement is common in those who have difficulty maintaining good posture, and from age-related wear and tear.

  3. Bursitis: A small sac in the shoulder that protects the tendons from underlying structures is called a bursa. When this bursa becomes inflamed, it can cause an increase in pain and irritation. This can be caused by underlying postural issues or weakness in certain structures in the shoulder.

4. Frozen shoulder: This condition often occurs when the joint capsule begins to stiffen. Clients often experience a lack of range of motion and significant pain. This could be caused by a period of immobilization, or without underlying cause.

Just because these diagnoses are common, doesn’t mean they are normal. If you are dealing with one of these diagnoses, we recommend the earlier the better to seek treatment and begin your healing journey!
